Guided Nature Walk

Manorhaven Beach, Woodlands and Gardens

with Spanish Translation

Transition Town Port Washington is hosting its first guided nature walk, in both English and Spanish, through the habitats of the Manorhaven Preserve and the Growing Love Community Garden on Sunday, April 24 from 9:00- 10:30 am.

With the arrival of Spring, the ground is warming and the earth is waking up. The first migratory birds are returning from the South, including red-winged blackbirds. Red maples and pussy willows are cross-pollinating with the sea-side wind.

We’ll make art from nature after collecting acorns, walnuts, colorful flowers and leaves, plants, fungus, seashells, crystals, and other treasures.  We’ll identify plant species, and discuss their leaves, flowers, colors, textures, and smells. We’ll look out for invasive species, and if time permits remove them to prevent them from damaging the habitat. We’ll log and share our observations with scientists to help them track how climate change is impacting plants and animal migrations.

The walk will be led by naturalists David Jakim and Yekica Munoz. Jakim is an environmental educator and the president of the Port Washington Monarch Butterfly Alliance.  Munoz is a nature enthusiast and native Spanish speaker.

* Please meet at the Growing Love Community Garden at 9:00am.
