Join Landmark and TTPW for a conversation about how regenerative farming and composting can trap carbon emissions and restore the soul and the soil. Hear from Marisa DeDominicis of Earth Matter, a closed-loop Compost Facility on Governors Island that converts food scraps from farmers markets and returns compost to city parks. Two other panelists will share the hour: Daniel Firth Griffith is an emergent conservationist and regenerative farmer at Timshel Wildland, a process-led landscape and farm in Central Virginia. As Catskills Mountainkeeper’s co-founder and associate director, Wes Gillingham is a farmer dedicated to pushing New York into a Just Transition away from fossil fuels. He has personally lived off the electric grid for over 30 years and serves on the advisory board of the Center for Earth Ethics. The discussion and Q & A will be moderated by Hildur Palsdottir. This free event is streaming on Zoom.

Marisa DeDominicis is the Executive Director and co-founder of Earth Matter NY Inc. where the mission is to reduce waste misdirected into the garbage stream by encouraging neighbor participation and leadership in composting. Marisa oversees the intensive on-farm composting training program that focuses on growing soil, education of volunteers and visitors, sale of herbs to island vendors, and donations of our fresh produce and eggs, to a local soup kitchen.

Daniel Firth Griffith is an emergent conservationist, author, and regenerative farmer at Timshel Wildland, a 400-acre emergent and process-led landscape and farm in Central Virginia that supplies resilient wildlife habitat and regenerative wild foods to their community. Daniel is the co-founder, with his wife, of the Robinia Institute, a Savory Institute Hub that works to advocate, demonstrate, and educate the supreme abundance of holistic and emergent systems. He is the Community Director of the Common Wealth Network, Savory Institute Accredited Professional, and the author of a best-selling book on Regenerative Agriculture, Wild Like Flowers: The Restoration of Relationship Through Regeneration. Most importantly, Daniel is an unworthy father to Elowyn, Tecumseh, and Sequoia, and an undeserving husband to the most wonderful wife this world has to offer.

Wes Gillingham, runs Wild Roots Farm, a 100-acre permaculture farm with his family. As Catskills Mountainkeeper’s co-founder and Associate Director, Wes helps develop the strategic thrust of our programs and coordinates collaborative efforts working with regional, state, and national partners on Extreme Energy Extraction and fossil fuel infrastructure fights. From 1996 to 2007 Wes and his wife ran a 150-member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) vegetable operation and during that time he also served on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of NY. Prior to farming, Wes served as an Acting Director of Field Programs for the National Audubon Society Expedition Institute, teaching graduate and undergraduate environmental education throughout North America and also worked as a Park Ranger for the National Park Service. Although graduating from the University of Maine his real education comes from his extensive experiences in rural and wilderness America. Growing up learning about the interaction of humans and natural world and leading educational trips throughout the U.S give him a real-world grounding that few people in today’s society have.

Dr. Hildur Palsdottir is a climate activist, community organizer, public speaker, and co-founder of ReWild Long Island. She is also president of the Board of Trustees at The Science Museum of Long Island and serves on the steering committee of Transition Town Port Washington. Hildur has a PhD in Biochemistry for research in Cellular Bioenergetics and worked as a Research Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and NYU Medical School. In 2017, she co-founded Sol Center in Port Washington. Hildur guides nature-based mindfulness and meditations at The Mindful Connection of Long Island in Merrick.
