It's Our Water! Water Quality Testing
Manorhaven Beach received a C rating from Save the Sound, an organization that monitors water quality in Long Island Sound and it’s bays and harbors. This was one of the 6 lowest rated beaches amongst over 200 beaches tested on Long Island.
Learn more about this issue and our new Citizen Science Water Quality Testing Program on Oct 26 from 7-9pm at It’s Our Water: How We Can Help Keep Our Pond Streams and Bays Clean and Safe at the Port Washington Public Library. Our lawn fertilizers and septic systems are as much of the problem as animal waste and stormwater runoff. You can play your part in addressing the adverse effect we have on marine and wildlife, and our safe use of the Bay for swimming, boating and fishing.
Our waterfront should be a place of pride, plenty, and healthy recreation. Manhasset Bay was once called the “shellfish garden of New York City” and was the largest oystering harbor on Long Island’s north shore. Now shellfish harvesting is illegal and unsafe. Going in the water, especially in the warm summer months, can be a significant health risk. We should be able to enjoy this beautiful natural resource as have past generations. Manhasset Bay is regularly tested for pollutants, but the ponds and streams that feed Manhasset Bay have not been regularly tested.
Together we can make positive change for our community, our children, and ourselves!
