Oyster Gardening at Port North Bay Walk Park

TTPW is excited to announce our partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension and Port Washington North to grow oysters at Bay Walk Park!

Why Oysters? Oysters are natural powerful water purifiers! A single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily, removing suspended particles and pollutants from our bay.

Beyond cleaning services, oyster reefs:

Combat shoreline erosion

Create vital habitat for marine life like crabs and small fish

Contribute to the ecological balance of our coastal ecosystems

Oyster gardening offers a fun and rewarding way to participate in the conservation and restoration of these essential shellfish populations.

Every two weeks, volunteers will:

Clean oyster cages of biofouling

Remove predators and manage symbiotic animals

Conduct growth and health assessments of the oysters

Join our team of Volunteers!

Our oyster gardening program will begin in early July when the oysters are seeded and continue through October, when they'll be relocated to oyster beds around Manhasset Bay.

Oyster Education Event:  1pm, Saturday June 14th, 2025 at thePort Washington Public Library

Interested in becoming a volunteer or just finding out more? Come to our education session to learn all about oysters: their role in Port's history, their biology, their challenges, & current volunteer opportunities!

If you can't attend on Saturday, but still want to participate, please email aamon@alt-technica.com.

Together, we can improve water quality and restore marine habitats in our local Bay!
