Composting Initiatives

Member families composting their food scraps

In October 2020, TTPW established a Community Compost demonstration facility at the Science Museum of Long Island with ten founding families. The program has grown steadily, and today more than twenty families regularly drop off food scraps on Saturday mornings and help maintain the composting operation. The Science Museum of Long Island has now taken over the management of this initial site, creating an opportunity for us to focus on composting education and new initiatives.

Become an "Earthmaker"

We're seeking passionate volunteers to establish new Community Composting hubs across our town at schools, houses of worship, parks, and other community spaces. Ready to make a difference? Complete our volunteer form.

Why Compost:

Transform your family's environmental footprint through composting—whether at home or at a community facility. Consider this: nearly 30% of food production is either incinerated or left to decompose in fields, storage facilities, dumpsters, and landfills. This waste generates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that traps up to 85% more heat than carbon dioxide.

Getting Started:

Curious about home composting methods? Contact us to learn about various approaches, including Bokashi (an anaerobic food scrap breakdown system) and vermiculture. Composting creates extraordinary environmental benefits and seamlessly integrates into your daily routine!
