Youth Day of Action in Albany

TTPW Youth Activist Sofia Leder’s poem: Why We Fight

On March 28th, six of our Port Washington students went to Albany and joined with over 350 of their fellow students from across New York State at the TREEage Youth Day of Action event to support the Climate, Jobs, and Justice Package (CJJP) inclusion into this year’s New York State Budget. The CJJP will help fund New York State’s climate goals, this includes the NY Heat Act and the Climate Change Superfund.

On December 26, Governor Hochul signed the Climate Superfund Act, a landmark bill that will require large corporate polluters to pay a fair share of the costs of repairing and mitigating damage from increasingly dangerous and costly extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and snowstorms.

The law is expected to generate $3 billion in new climate adaptation and mitigation funding beginning in 2028. Most of these rising costs are currently borne by taxpayers.
